Who is Kasuri Kurume?

Kurume Kasuri, a cotton fabric that is also a traditional craft, has been handed down in the Chikugo region in the southern part of what is now Fukuoka Prefecture. As work clothes were hand-woven in each home, plain colors were common, but one day a farmer's daughter accidentally discovered a technique for creating gentle patterns on textiles. By dyeing the cotton thread first and then weaving it, subtle misalignment occurs, resulting in a unique faded pattern, which later became Kurume Kasuri. Today, in addition to traditional geometric patterns and indigo dyeing, many products are made with modern patterns and pop colors.

Kasuri-ori flourished in this region because the Chikugo River, said to be the largest in Kyushu, flows through the area, and the rich soil and abundant clean water were suitable for the production of Kasuri. It is characterized by being gentle to the touch and extremely light. It keeps you cool in the summer and warm in the winter, so you can use it regardless of the season. Unlike other stoles, you don't have to straighten the wrinkles and it looks great even after washing.
