A 5-inch accessory case made using traditional marquetry techniques. The box is surrounded by a delicate pattern of marquetry, giving it a beauty that draws you in. The patterns of marquetry are made with various color combinations, but these are apparently expressed using the colors of natural wood from Japan and abroad, rather than colored wood. Perhaps it is because the colors are created by nature that they have a mysterious charm.
Traditional crafts that have continued since the end of the Edo period
A 5-inch accessory case made using traditional marquetry techniques. Yosegizaiku is a woodworking technique that creates geometric patterns by combining various types of wood, and is a popular traditional craft that is rooted in Hakone. Yosegi-zaiku is said to have been created by Nibe Ishikawa at the end of the Edo period, and has been passed down for nearly 200 years. To make it, you cut pieces of wood according to the pattern, and then combine and glue them together to create a block of wood called a seed board. Based on this, the surface is thinly shaved and pasted on a wooden product, which is called ``zuku'', and the one that is carved from the seed board using a potter's wheel is called ``muku''. At Tsuyuki Mokkosho, we combine wood of various colors and grains from Japan and abroad to create modern patterns that are based on traditional patterns but in keeping with modern styles.
The 5-inch accessory case is a wooden storage case with a lid, and is a convenient size for organizing small items on a table. It prevents dust from entering, so it is also recommended for storing watches and accessories. There are two types of patterns: ``Ichimatsu'' and ``Sunflower field.'' It is said that there are about 50 patterns in Hakone parquet work, and the checkered pattern, which has squares lined up regularly, is a pattern that is easy to incorporate into interiors because the combination of colors does not give it an overly Japanese impression. On the other hand, the sunflower field is an original pattern from Tsuyuki Mokkojo. It is made from a combination of small pieces of wood, and has a bright pattern reminiscent of a field of sunflowers. Accessory cases made using traditional Japanese techniques are also recommended as gifts for people overseas.
New marquetry that blends into modern life
Tsuyuki Mokkojo was founded in Odawara in 1923. Currently, the third generation, Mr. Kiyokatsu, and the fourth generation, Mr. Kiyotaka, are taking over the business. It began when the first Mr. Seikichi Tsuyuki, who was born in Hakone Town, became independent after studying under Mr. Jinzaburo, the grandson of Mr. Nibei Ishikawa, the founder of Yosegi Zaiku. Marquetry is a traditional craft that has been passed down in the Hakone-Odawara region since the Edo period, and was designated as a national traditional craft in 1981.
At Tsuyuki Mokkojo, we actively challenge new fields while preserving tradition, and we also work on interiors for popular hotels in Hakone. While preserving traditional techniques and techniques, we continue to create new marquetry that blends into modern life.
