The hand-woven Noto Jofu kasuri fabric, each with its own unique look, is woven by artisans. Noto hand-dyed fabrics have little bleeding and are characterized by their intricate and clean kasuri patterns. The patterns created by the unique dyeing techniques called kushi-oshi printing and roll printing have a calm color scheme and a modern atmosphere, giving them a sense of elegance.
We would like to introduce a fragment case made from scraps of Noto Jofu. This item combines the dignified transparency of kasuri with a rustic warmth. At first glance, the design is simple, but the diagonally placed card pockets add an accent to the spoon. The design is wonderful, as it gives you a sense of the collar of a kimono and Japanese style. It can be used in a variety of ways, and can be used as a wallet, as well as to store accessories, lipstick, and first-aid medicines, making it very convenient to use. It is also thin and compact, so it does not take up much space even when placed in a bag, haori, or pants pocket.
The Spirit of Tradition Passed Down
Notojofu (Notojofu) continued to develop through technical improvements during the Edo period. Jofu means high-quality hemp fabric.
Even as people began to move away from kimonos after the war, Yamazaki Hemp Weaving Studio has continued to pass on hand-dyeing techniques and promote traditional culture and aesthetics. 130 years after its founding, it is the only weaver of Notojofu and is sending out hemp fabric products that have a high-quality weaving feel to the world in order to connect the charm of Notojofu to the next generation.
One of the characteristics of Notojofu is that it uses ramie, which has been used since ancient Japan, rather than the common linen. Ramie is said to have the most firmness and crispness of all natural fibers, and is an excellent material that combines transparency, luster, and lightness. It is durable enough to be used for decades to come, and the more you wash it, the softer it becomes, so you can enjoy the changes over time while using it for a long time.
The more you use it, the more you will love this Noto Jofu fragment case. With designs that can be chosen by both men and women, and its high practicality for everyday use, it is a Japanese modern accessory that will be appreciated as a gift for Mother's Day, Father's Day, or a birthday gift for a special person.
A new everyday style for Noto Jofu
Yamazaki Hemp Weaving Studio was founded in 1891 (Meiji 24) as a dyeing shop in Hakui City, Ishikawa Prefecture, a former hemp production area. It is the only weaving factory that has inherited the craftsmanship of Noto Jofu for over 100 years.
Although it was designated an Intangible Cultural Property of Ishikawa Prefecture in the early Showa period, the demand for kimonos decreased with the trend towards Western clothing, and the number of local craftsmen decreased, leading to a time when Noto Joufu was said to be "dying." However, many people still visit from other regions to learn about handicrafts, so the kimono and accessory brand "Noto Joufu YAMAZAKI NOTOJOFU" was established to propose the value of Noto Joufu in a new era and to pass on the traditional skills that have been preserved for generations to the next generation.
Produced by the only Noto Joufu weaving studio, "Noto Joufu YAMAZAKI NOTOJOFU" continues to create hemp textiles that blend into everyday life, using the kasuri designs and hand-dyeing techniques unique to Joufu, with the theme of meeting Noto's traditional hemp textiles with dignified everyday life.
