The hand-woven Noto Jofu kasuri fabric, each with its own unique look, is woven by artisans. Noto hand-dyed fabrics have little bleeding and are characterized by their intricate and clean kasuri patterns. The patterns created by the unique comb-press printing and roll printing techniques have a calm color scheme and a modern feel, giving them a sense of elegance.
We would like to introduce you to earrings made from scraps of Noto Jofu. The dignified transparency and rustic warmth of the kasuri are expressed with small, delicate flowers. One of the features is the natural color that blends in with the skin and face, subtly decorating the face. In addition, the metal parts are made of K18, a material that is gentle on the skin, so you can use them with confidence.
The spirit of tradition passed down
Noto Jofu continued to improve its technology and developed during the Edo period. Jofu means high-quality hemp fabric.
Even as people have been moving away from kimonos since the postwar era, Yamazaki Hemp Weaving Studio has continued to pass on hand-dyeing techniques to generations and spread traditional culture and aesthetics. Now, 130 years after its founding, it is the only weaver of Notojofu and is sending out hemp fabric products that have a high-quality weaving feel to the world in order to connect the charm of Notojofu to the next generation.
Another feature of Notojofu is that it uses ramie, which has been used in Japan since ancient times, rather than the common linen. Ramie is said to have the most firmness and crispness of all natural fibers, and is an excellent material that combines transparency, luster, and lightness. It is durable enough to be used for decades to come, and the more you wash it, the softer it becomes, so you can enjoy the changes over time while using it for a long time.
Notojofu earrings are simple yet subtly color your ears, making them a great gift. A modern Japanese accessory that will be appreciated as a Mother's Day or birthday gift for a friend.
A new everyday style for Notojofu
Yamazaki Hemp Weaving Studio was founded in 1891 (Meiji 24) as a dyeing shop in Hakui City, Ishikawa Prefecture, a former hemp production area. For over 100 years, it has been the only weaving factory that has inherited the craftsmanship of Notojofu.
Although it was designated as an intangible cultural property of Ishikawa Prefecture in the early Showa period, the demand for kimonos decreased due to the trend toward Western clothing, and the number of craftsmen in the production area decreased, and Notojofu went through such a difficult time that it was said to be "dying". However, many people still visit from other regions to learn handicrafts, so in order to connect the traditional skills that have been preserved for generations to the next generation, we established the kimono and accessory brand "Notojofu YAMAZAKI NOTOJOFU" to propose the value of Notojofu in a new era.
Produced by the only weaving workshop in Noto Joufu, "YAMAZAKI NOTOJOFU" operates under the theme of "encountering Noto's traditional hemp textiles with dignified everyday life." Using the kasuri designs and hand-dyeing techniques unique to Joufu, the brand continues to produce hemp textiles that blend into everyday life.
