handvaerk is a cut and sew brand founded in New York in 2013. Handvaerk was founded by Esteban Saba, a former investment banker, and his wife Petra, who studied art and textile design at a university in Prague. Esteban grew up in a family that has run sewing and spinning factories in Peru for three generations. After graduating from a university in California, he obtained an MBA from the University of California, Santa Barbara. After achieving success as an elite banker specializing in M&A at a major bank, he left Wall Street and started handvaerk. Handvaerk sources Peruvian cotton (Pima cotton) itself, and carries out all processes from spinning, knitting, dyeing, and sewing in a factory run by his family so that he can keep an eye on them. In 2015, he opened his own factory and gradually shifted to in-house production, further improving the quality of his products through consistent product management.
