BENRUS was founded in New York in 1921. It was founded by Benjamin Lazulas and his two brothers. With the funds they had prepared, they established a production system in which they imported excellent Swiss movements and assembled (cased) them in the United States. They then used aviator Charles Lindbergh and baseball player Babe Ruth in their advertising, and their dress watches in the 1930s and waterproof watches with inner bezels in the 1960s, the Ultra Deep, became popular and gained recognition.

The brand's name became particularly well-known during the Vietnam War. Thanks to its connection with a Swiss manufacturer that has continued since the brand's launch, it has gained a strong reputation as a domestically produced brand that produces military watches for the government.
