At JOHN SMEDLEY, we contract directly with carefully selected farms to exclusively source high-quality New Zealand merino wool and use it as material for our products. At the farms, we give names to each sheep and carefully manage and raise them. The crimp of the long-haired merino wool gives it elasticity and stretch, and the snow-white yarn creates products with a beautiful, elegant luster and a supple feel. At JOHN SMEDLEY, we twist and dye only the long-haired raw wool from this top-quality merino wool and turn it into products. All of our products are made in our own factory, so we can maintain a high quality that lasts a long time with a luxurious feel.

Inherited traditions and techniques

JOHN SMEDLEY was founded in 1784 in Derbyshire, England, by Peter Nightingale and John Smedley. When the company was first established, it started with spinning cotton and making fabric, and by the end of the 18th century, it had begun to manufacture woolen fabrics and socks. In 1819, John Smedley's son, John II, took over from his predecessor at the young age of 24 and set a policy of carrying out all processes from spinning to knitting and sewing in-house. This policy was the driving force behind JOHN SMEDLEY's rise from a small spinning factory to a known knitwear manufacturer. In addition, the fourth generation introduced the most advanced spinning and knitting machines of the time and began manufacturing fine gauge knitwear.
