Zirconia is a refined mineral called zircon native to Australia. Zirconia has three characteristics: "jewel-like hardness," "metal-like suppleness," and "porcelain-like non-allergen." It is a mineral-derived material with the hardness next to diamond and ruby. Zircon itself was also used as an imitation diamond in the olden days. Zirconia has two types of crystals hidden inside, each of which has different properties, and flexibly changes it by the force applied from the outside, so it has both metal-like hardness and suppleness. Ceramics made by sintering at a high temperature of about 1400 degrees, like porcelain of pottery, do not elute metal ions at all and do not cause metal allergies, so you can use it with confidence. It has been used for medical purposes in implants and artificial joints. I want to convey the original taste as it is
The founder, who moved from Japan to Germany in 2001 and worked for an injection molding machine manufacturer, came across a material called zirconia there. When I lived in Germany, I was often asked to be interested in Japan, and I was asked to serve Japanese food, so I had the opportunity to make it. Take the soup stock from the dried bonito that was ordered from Japan and taste it with a metal spoon. Then I had such an experience that it didn't taste. Since German water is hard water, it does not produce good soup stock, and metal spoons decompose lipids by oxidative action to generate a metallic odor, so I could not feel the slight taste of soup stock. I realized that metal cutlery is not suitable for Japanese food, which values the umami (amino acids) and the original taste of the ingredients, as opposed to European cuisine, which values the aroma and finished taste. It all started with the idea that tasteless and odorless zirconia, which is the same as porcelain and does not generate metal ions at all, could certainly convey the deliciousness of Japanese food and the taste of the ingredients.
At the same time as joining my father's plastic processing company in 2005, I started research and development of zirconia materials, and in 2007 I established a zirconia research department, utilizing the experience I have cultivated in my previous job with injection molding machines and plastics. We proceeded with the production while applying. The zirconia processing method is difficult to control when pouring the raw material into the mold, and in order not to damage it when it is taken out of the mold, we pursued convincing manufacturing by manually applying the applied technology. Finally, in 2015, we started ZIKICO, a daily necessities brand that uses zirconi. With the goal of making it a new traditional craft 100 years later, we are delivering a number of items to the world. In 2017 and 2019, we won the design award, and all of them are not only about materials but also about design.
