Burleigh's set of 4 fruit plates is a genuine British product made in our own factory using the soil that is the basis of the pottery from the UK. The surface design inherits the old technique of "copper plate transfer", and the craftsmen pattern it in the same way as prints, so the shades of color and the position of the pattern are different one by one. Therefore, you can fully enjoy the goodness of British antiques. It is a pottery that makes you feel the joy of living every day while expressing yourself by incorporating good things with individuality into your life, not the same mass-produced ones.
The product name in the UK is "Butter Pad". Of course, you can put fruits on it, but it's also deep, so it's recommended for ice cream and sweets. With a size that fits in both hands, it is also useful when serving Japanese sweets such as Daifuku and Ohagi to customers. Of course, there are various uses such as using it as a plate to set aside.
There are 4 types of patterns. A bright blue "Blue Calico" that catches everyone's eyes. Burleigh's representative design is popular for its high-contrast colors. In Japan, Prunas, which is called "Niwazakura", is designed with the image of falling on ice.
The black-based, chic and cool impression of "Black Legal Peacock" was specially unveiled in 1913 for King George and Queen Mary. It depicts the elegant peacock that appears in "The Oriental Fairy Tale of Choosing the King of Birds". It was not produced in recent years, but it was reprinted in 2014. Since it has a historical pattern, the copper plate has also deteriorated, so it was re-engraved for this reproduction. There is an elegance that has no other monochrome contrast.
"Gray Calico" with a gentle color and elegance. It is called dub gray and means pigeon color. The image is gentle and elegant like a dove, a symbol of peace.
"Blue Felicity" with pure and innocent cuteness like a girl. It is studded with florets reminiscent of the elderberry tree, which is a member of the osteopathic tree used for medicinal purposes. The bright blue like the clear blue sky like summer makes you feel refreshed.
Burleigh pottery that brightens the feelings of those who want to change their new life or life a little.
We are also pleased with presents for those who are welcoming a new life and celebrations of marriage and moving.
Making products that inherit traditional techniques
Burleigh's products are all made in the UK from the raw soil. As it was 170 years ago, it is made by skilled craftsmen using traditional techniques and the highest quality raw materials. The soil used for the pottery is liquid clay, which is constantly stirred by a large automatic paddle while adjusting the temperature. When this liquid clay reaches the correct concentration, it is pumped to a foundry and poured into a plaster mold to shape the product. Unused clay is returned to the slip house and mixed with liquid clay for reuse, so no material is wasted. The mold uses plaster, which has the property of absorbing water from clay. All plaster molds are also made in our own factory in the UK.
Store in a drying rack for several days until the clay in the plaster mold is sufficiently dry. After drying, it is removed from the mold, but the pottery is very delicate and requires specialized skills. After unglazed, use a sponge to smooth the surface.
After that, patterning is performed by copper plate transfer. The copper plate is completed by hand-carving the pattern on a roll-shaped copper plate for patterning using various types of needles. It takes more than 6 weeks to complete one pattern of copper plate, and you can see the polite work one by one. Apply ink to the finished copper plate and print the pattern on thin calligraphy (tissue). Before the ink on the printed roll paper dries, the paper is cut and pasted one by one according to the shape of the unglazed pottery, and the rubbing pattern is transferred with a brush in the same way as a print of a painting. After transferring the copper plate, evenly coat the glassy glaze and perform the third baking operation. By proceeding with this process, there is a handle under the glaze, so the picture can be used semi-permanently without peeling off.
Such technology was widely used in Britain 200 years ago. With more prints both domestically and internationally, Burleigh is now the last British pottery maker to continue this traditional and advanced process and is highly regarded around the world.
Sticking to MADE IN ENGLAND
Blessed with abundant coal and pottery as fuel, rich soil and climate suitable for pottery, Stoke-on-Trent is known as the English Pottery Village. Burleigh was founded there in 1851 (Victorian era) by Frederick Burgess, William Leigh and has a history of more than 170 years. Using the traditional technique of "copper transfer" from the time of its founding, we mainly made tableware necessary for the custom of English tea culture. For 130 years since moving to its current factory in Stoke-on-Trent in 1889, the entire series has been manufactured there. The factory is designated as an important cultural property.
Burleigh pottery is all made in the UK from soil, and even now, about 100 craftsmen make each piece by the same method as when it was founded, such as mold manufacturing, copper plate transfer, and glazed. It is full of handmade tastes such as warm colors and a form that is familiar to the hands.
