Founded in 1985 on the site of an old textile factory called "Farfield Mill" in Sedbergh, England, the company started out as a subcontractor for outdoor wear and underwear and mid-layer clothing for the British military. In the 1990s, the company started a children's clothing line called "Tough Customer" using original fleece fabric produced in collaboration with a local fabric manufacturer. Currently, while producing original fleece products, the company also makes clothing for the National Trust, a volunteer organization that protects history and nature, such as gardening aprons and special jackets.

Many brands are switching to production in other countries for various reasons, such as cost reduction. Farfield is British and takes responsibility and pride in its British-made products, and continues to focus on production in the UK to contribute to the local community of Sedbergh, where the workshop is located. The company started out with the concept of using local animals, insects and everyday items in its designs to make clothes that would be comfortable to wear while living in Sedbergh, but its excellent design and functionality caught the attention of people all over the world, and it is now known as a fleece specialist manufacturer. As the factory mainly operates during the winter season, it is not mass-produced, and each item is carefully sent out into the world.
