Nankaze Kogei was founded in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture in 1979. Currently, it is produced in Hiji Town, located on the north side of Beppu City.
The beginning of Beppu bamboo crafts is so old that it is mentioned in the Nihon Shoki.When the 12th Emperor of the Kofun period stopped by Beppu on his way back from conquering the Kumaso, the accompanying chef (kitchen person) noticed that there was a lot of high-quality bamboo. It is said that it began when he discovered it and made a tea bowl basket. During the Edo period, the name of Beppu, Japan's best hot spring resort, spread throughout the country, and people began to flock to Beppu from all over the country. They were brought home as souvenirs, and bamboo crafts became popular. For this reason, Beppu is home to the only professional training school for bamboo crafts in Japan, and is a producing area that is also focusing on training successors.
