BURLEIGH MUG 350ML

Feelings of gratitude

A cup of coffee in the morning when you are half asleep, and a relaxing time with sweets and tea during your afternoon break. Before going to sleep, melt away your fatigue with hot milk or hot cocoa and give yourself a "thank you for your hard work." Isn't it your favorite mug that makes such a day seem natural and gently accompanies you and gives you a sense of fulfillment?

There are many types of mugs in the world. Among them, the mugs of Burleigh, a historic pottery manufacturer in England, where afternoon tea culture is located, are all made in England, from the clay down. Despite this commitment, you can enjoy them with your eyes and feel the unique special feeling that can only be experienced because they are handmade.

Not only coffee and tea, but also soup

Burleigh tableware is not only practical, but also visually appealing, and makes the table look gorgeous. The handle is a size and shape that makes it easy to hold, and the capacity is about 350ml. This mug size is perfect for those who want to keep warm, not only with standard coffee and tea, but also with potage soup and corn soup. Three patterns are available.

"Blue Felicity" is scattered with pale blue flowers. The pattern is reminiscent of elderflowers blooming like stars. Elderflowers have long had a special meaning in England, such as warding off evil, and are a traditional and familiar presence for the people of England. The delicate pattern is soothing, not too assertive but having a moderate presence on the desk.

"Blue Calico" is a vivid blue that catches everyone's eye. It is one of Burleigh's representative designs, popular for its strong contrasting colors. The design depicts prunus, known as "garden cherry blossoms" in Japan, falling on ice.

"Black Regal Peacock" has a chic and cool impression with a black base, and was specially unveiled for King George and Queen Mary in 1913. This piece depicts an elegant peacock that appears in the "Oriental fairy tale of choosing a bird king." It has not been produced in recent years, but was reissued in 2014. Because it is a historic pattern, the copper plate has deteriorated, so it was re-carved for this revival. The monochrome contrast gives it a unique elegance.

Burleigh tableware brightens up your daily life, and also makes a good impression when used with guests, so it is recommended as a birthday gift, a gift for someone starting a new life, or a wedding or housewarming gift.

Products made with traditional techniques

Some Burleigh pieces, which have a good old British feel, are sold as antiques, and the reason for this is the traditional manufacturing method of "copper plate transfer," which has been used for 200 years and is similar to printmaking.
The copperplate printing plate itself is also made by craftsmen, who use many different types of needles to hand-carve intricate patterns into rolled copperplate, and it takes more than six weeks to complete one pattern.
The copperplate is then inked, the pattern is transferred to a flat piece of paper, and before the ink on the paper dries, it is then transferred to a three-dimensional piece of ceramic. Each step is performed by a dedicated craftsman, and Burleigh is the only manufacturer that has inherited this technique to the present day.
The clay is also British, and they are particular about the ingredients they use. The clay is added with water and constantly stirred into a liquid form in a device called a slip house, and when it reaches the right concentration, it is poured into a plaster mold. It is then stored on a drying rack for a few days, and once it is dry, it is removed from the mold and bisque fired. The surface of each piece is smoothed with a sponge, which is a very delicate process.
In this way, the tableware with gorgeous patterns, each one of which is made by hand, has a warmth that is not found in mass production today. The continuous patterns have different shades of color and the position of the pattern, but please enjoy imagining how they were made.

Blessed with rich soil and climate

Burleigh was born in Stoke-on-Trent, known as the home of British pottery.

Founded in 1851 (Victorian era) by Frederick Burgess and William Leigh in a place blessed with an abundance of coal for fuel and clay, as well as rich soil and climate suitable for pottery, the company has a history of over 170 years. Since its founding, the company has mainly produced tableware necessary for the British tea culture using the traditional technique of "copperplate transfer". The factory is now a designated Important Cultural Property, a building treasured by the nation, and when it comes to manufacturing, they choose time-consuming methods that avoid wasting raw materials, and they create products with respect and gratitude for the earth.

Burleigh tableware is warm and carefully made by many people, and it is tableware and manufacturing that we want to pass on for the next 100 or 200 years to come.

Feature of product

  • - Made using copperplate transfer printing, a traditional method that has been used in the UK for 200 years.
    - Each piece is designed by hand.
    - The raw clay and manufacturing processes are all sourced in the UK.

Notice

  • - When plates are fired in a kiln after glazing, the back of the pottery is supported and fixed with ceramic parts in three places. Therefore, there are three places on the back where there is no glaze or there are small bumps, but this is a characteristic of the product and does not affect its use.
    - The patterns are applied using ink called "copper plate transfer" in the manner of printmaking, so the color shade and pattern position vary from piece to piece. The pattern may also be cut and misaligned as if it was joined together.
    - When firing pottery, the ink may pop in the furnace and small dots may be scattered.
    - When attaching the paper, the ink may become distorted and some of the ink may become solidified, called "ink pools."
    - The above is a characteristic of Burleigh products, all of which are handmade, so it is not a defective product.
Please enjoy the unique Burleigh copper plate transfer pattern, which is now said to be the only one in the world.
    - Due to the nature of pottery, please avoid soaking it in water.
    - Crazing (like fine cracks in the glaze) may occur over time or due to sudden temperature changes. This does not mean that the pottery is cracked, so you can continue to use it as is.

Burleigh

"Burleigh" was founded by Frederick Burgess, William Leigh in 1851 (Victorian era) in Stoke-on-Trent, which is blessed with rich soil and climate suitable for pottery. Using the traditional technique of "copper transfer" from the time of its founding, we mainly made tableware necessary for the custom of English tea culture. Burleigh pottery is all made in England from the soil, and even now, about 100 craftsmen make one by one by the same method as when it was founded, such as mold manufacturing, copper plate transfer, and glazing. It is full of handmade tastes such as warm colors and a form that is familiar to the hands.
