Adding an oval plate to the basic shapes of a circle or square creates rhythm on the table and makes it look much more gorgeous. And with an oval plate, just by gently placing food in the center, there is space on both sides, which naturally makes the food look delicious and appetizing, so it can be used in cafes and other places. Why not try a new plate as a fashion accent item in your daily routine of having the same menu on your table every day?
When incorporating warm pottery into your life, one thing to consider is how to handle it. Pottery, which is so-called earthenware, is delicate, and many people may hesitate to use it on a daily basis. For those people, we recommend starting with porcelain, which is durable and easy to handle. Porcelain made from pottery stone is fired at high temperatures of over 1200℃ when it is created, and can be used in the dishwasher and microwave without any problems.
In addition, even though it is called porcelain, there are various types depending on the place of origin, such as Kutani ware, which is characterized by its colorful painting, and Arita ware, which is characterized by its elegant whiteness. Among them, we would like to introduce Tobe-yaki, a simple, plump, and warm porcelain. The dishes made by Baizangama, the oldest kiln of Tobe-yaki, which is designated as a national traditional craft, are not only beautifully painted, but also have a unique charm that only a long-established store can offer, as it has been a part of people's lives for 150 years.
Versatile dishes and beautiful painting
The 8.2-inch oval plate features handle-like rims on both sides. It is just the right depth for serving curry, stew, rolled cabbage, and pasta. The rims create a moderate amount of space, so even if you serve food casually, it will look great. It is also nice to serve small sweets, sandwiches, fruits, etc. on it and enjoy the atmosphere of a small restaurant. When buying plates, we tend to reach for the familiar round plates, but oval plates are also versatile and can be used for anything. The durability of porcelain means that they can withstand rough handling, so why not make them your first plate?
The three designs we have prepared this time, "Balloon Flowers," "Obi Arabesque," and "Arabesque," are painted by artisans in one stroke using a unique technique called the Umeyama style. While possessing the dynamism unique to folk crafts, they are neither too flashy nor too simple, and will blend in with any dish. The lively designs based on nature will bring out the color of monochromatic dishes, and the white base and vivid blue color of the gosu, which are characteristic of porcelain, will bring out the colors of multi-colored dishes and stimulate your appetite. The rustic Japanese plates go well with non-Japanese cuisine, so they can be used for a variety of dishes.
Tableware that breathes tradition
Tobe ware began production in 1775, and Umeyama Kiln, a long-established kiln that has continued to walk alongside that long history, was opened by Umeno Masagoro in 1882. It is the oldest Tobe ware kiln, and after the Pacific War, Soetsu Yanagi, Shoji Hamada, Shigeo Suzuki, Kanjiro Kawai, and others who promoted the folk art movement that advocated the value of "beauty is in life" in order to revive Tobe ware, were involved in the production of Umeyama Kiln, perfecting a unique technique that is made by hand, from the potter's wheel to painting.
The flow of this movement has been passed down to the present day as "shapes that are close to life," "patterns that make you feel nature," and "simple and beautiful handiwork," and continues to make tableware that is close to the user under the concept of "use and beauty."
Baizan Kiln uses only locally produced materials, from the pottery stone to the gosu pigment, and is a brand that is rooted not only in daily life but also in the local community. The pottery, filled with deep feelings for the makers, users, and the local community, contains a beauty that you will never want to let go of.
