CASWELL-MASSEY began as a pharmacy founded in Newport, Rhode Island, USA in 1752 by Scottish-born pharmacist William Hunter. At the time, Newport was also known as the place to shop for European luxury goods, and while Hunter sold pharmaceuticals, he also sold cosmetics, personal care products, and more. They also imported fragrances from Europe and blended 20 unique colognes, numbered from 1 to 20. Among them, No. 6 was often purchased by George Washington, which spread the popularity of CASWELL-MASSEY fragrances among politicians and intellectuals at the time.
