Tracing the history of moccasins

Moccasins come in a wide range of prices due to the trend toward mechanization, but if you trace their history, they were traditional footwear made by Native Americans for thousands of years. Each tribe has its own style that suits their environment and culture, and they are famous for being handmade from a single piece of soft leather, such as deerskin, that wraps around the foot.

BASTIEN moccasins are also traditional moccasins made by the Wendat people, a Native American tribe.

Traditional techniques and rare materials

The soft feel of the moose leather is what makes them so comfortable to wear. It is a material that is carefully handled by the Wendat people, who still maintain their traditional hunting lifestyle.

The moccasins that wrap around the foot are still made by hand by artisans using a technique called "moccasin stitching," in which a U-shaped upper is sewn together. Also, unlike regular shoes, BASTIEN does not use wooden lasts, but instead makes them to fit the shape of the foot. This shape also makes them easy to walk in.

Manufacturers that continue to make traditional moccasins in North America are becoming rarer every year. BASTIEN continues to maintain the same quality and technology even in such a situation.

Inheritance of historic handicrafts

Bastien is a snowshoe and moccasin manufacturer founded in 1878 by the Bastian family of the Wendat tribe in Canada.

The Wendat tribe had been running workshops for manufacturing shoes and gloves since around 1830, but when Maurice Bastian established the company as a full-fledged manufacturing company, the Wendat tribe began making shoes.

For over 140 years, they have preserved traditional techniques and culture, and continue to use the same manufacturing methods in Wandake, Quebec, a settlement. North America has a long tradition of moccasins, but there are now very few manufacturers who continue to make them by hand in that region. The comfort of traditional, authentic moccasins is something special that cannot be replaced by anything else.
